Huawei And The University Of Edinburgh Release 5G Network Enabled Robotics Applications White Paper

Huawei and the University of Edinburgh jointly released the 5G Network enabled Robotics Applications white paper at this year’s Global Mobile Broadband Forum in Zurich, elaborating on the roles of 5G and Network enabled Robotics Applications. According to the white paper, 5G wireless networks will help to support a revolution in healthcare, supporting more effective and lower cost medical services.

The white paper points out ubiquitous wireless communications can help to enable smart medical data collection and processing, more efficient and timely medical interventions and enable robotic systems to support clinicians effectively in their daily work.

The wireless network connection can provide access to cloud computing to enable the robot to communicate naturally with patients and medical staff using speech and visual displays where appropriate.

In future applications, robots could be tasked with limited levels of autonomous operation, ranging from assistive tasks such as tool handling, to specialised image-guided closed-loop procedures such as radiotherapy (and, one day, interventional surgery) under the supervision of an expert.

5G is gaining more industry-wide acknowledgment due to its growing list of industry applications. Healthcare and robotics are already seeing the benefits thanks to the cutting edge applications developed by Huawei, its partners and the world leading research carried out at the University of Edinburgh.
